In 1991, Alexey graduated from the Secondary Special Music School of the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, class of trombone of Honored Artist of Russia Georgy Strautman. Then he continued his studies at the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory , class of trombone of Associate Professor Boris Vinogradov and Professor Viktor Sumerkin. In 2009, Alexey completed an internship in specialty "symphonic conducting" in class of Professor Alexander Polishchuk (Professor’s I.A. Musin student).

In autumn 1991 he was admitted to the Mariinsky Theater as an artist of the stage orchestra, since 1996 - as an artist of the theater's symphony orchestra (group of trombones).

Since 2007 Alexey Repnikov has been Conductor of the Mariinsky Theater Stage Orchestra. His debut with the Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra took place in I. Stravinsky's ballet “The Rite of Spring” (2007). Since that time, he has regularly conducted ballet performances.

As a conductor, Alexey Repnikov has appeared with the Mariinsky Theater troup at Covent Garden (Great Britain), Festspielhaus (Germany), the Metropolitan Opera and the Kennedy Center (USA). He has been on tours in Japan, China (as well as Shanghai and Singapore), Thailand, Germany, France, Switzerland, Finland, Spain, Italy, Great Britain, USA, Canada, Brazil, Mexico.

Alexey Repnikov initiated the creation of the Big Brass Ensemble. He was an author of idea to create international festival “Brass Evenings at the Mariinsky”, which was first staged at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theater in March 2008. As a head of the Big Brass Ensemble, he participated in the Mikkeli Summer Festival (Finland, 2009), toured Great Britain, Japan, Switzerland.

Alexey organized festival symphony orchestra "Soul of St. Petersburg", which participated in cultural events of the city.

As a leading ballet conductor of St. Petersburg, he has staged several performances at the Mariinsky Theater with the A. A. Vaganova - "Fairy of the Dolls" and "The Nutcracker".

From 2016 to 2020, in parallel to conducting activity, Alexey was the head of the Mariinsky Theater orchestras.

In 2020, he changed over to the post of conductor at the Mikhailovsky Theater (St. Petersburg), being also a guest conductor of the Bolshoi Theater (Moscow).

At the Mikhailovsky Theater Alexey Repnikov's repertoire includes such ballets as "The Nutcracker", "Swan Lake", "The Sleeping Beauty", "Cinderella", "Romeo and Juliet", "Spartacus", "Chippolino", "Don Quixote", "La Bayadère", "La Sylphide", "Giselle", "Corsair", "Coppelia", "Vain Precaution", "Flame of Paris", "Laurencia".

Since 2021 Alexey has been the Musical Director of the Mikhailovsky Theater Ballet.
